Far Field Farm - Our Mission and Philosophy
Our Mission and Philosophy
Far Field's young horses are raised in what we consider the best manner for the promotion of future soundness, health, attitude, and longevity. They are well fed but not over fed, and they are not started in training until they are mature enough to handle the physical and mental stress of the training regimen. For some young horses this maturity level may not occur until the fourth year of age, so it is our job to watch and evaluate them and make good decisions about when a youngster is ready to be started."

More than 40 years of horse breeding have shown us the importance of disposition, attitude, and trainability in our breeding horses. We constantly upgrade our breeding stock continually striving to produce foals with a natural desire to move athletically and willingly and to do so with boldness, believing that if a horse comes into the world this way, it is a willing performer, happy to please, eager to train, and unafraid of the next step. This is the goal of our breeding program.

With over 235 acres, Far Field's young horses are fortunate to have large enough pastures where they have the opportunity in a natural setting to develop strong lungs, muscles, and bones so important to the growing horse. Until their third year, they see very little of the inside of a barn except for preliminary handling and socialization. One of the most common sounds at this farm is the thundering sound of galloping horses, stretching their legs, and enjoying their youth. We firmly believe that animal athletes need this beginning to develop properly, and in fact research has shown that with just two weeks of constant stall confinement, a young horse loses significant measureable bone density. Just as an Olympic human athlete cannot develop sitting inside his apartment, a young horse, more than most other animals, must have the physical movement of muscle and bone to develop proper bone density and strength as well as lung capacity.

If you decide after consideration that you would like to purchase a horse from Far Field, you will learn all about it........its good points as well as any shortcomings or factors you need to be aware of as its future owner. Additionally, if you are new to ASB's or a first time horse owner, we would be happy to recommend trainers and offer recommendations on transportation options for your purchase. Transporting a horse from California to the midwest, for example, usually adds about $900 to its purchase price.

We are the first to recognize that not all American Saddlebreds are saddle seat show horses, and it is important for us to know that these colts who have spent years in our care have the best opportunity to have healthy and rewarding ownership, good for both the horse and the buyer. Whether as saddle seat show horses, sport horses, trail horses, or general purpose riding horses, the goal of our farm is for our young stock to go into the larger world to make names for themselves and show exactly what great and intelligent horses they are in a multitude of disciplines.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about our farm.
